Today we went to the salt mines or Strataca. It is one of the eight wonders of Kansas. When we took a lift down 650 feet and it was cold. When we were at the bottom we saw the walls of salt. They were large and looked like they would never end.
We saw the machinery they used to drill the salt. I went on two tram rides and train ride underground to learn more about the mine. On one tram ride we got to go out into the real mining area from the 1950’s & we saw salt crystals. Things were left just like they were in the 50’s. The miners left all their trash behind and it didn’t decompose because of the humidity and no animals to eat at it.
Twice we got souvenir salt on the tram ride. We got to get off in the mine and chose them near the end of the rides.
