I will add pictures later but I wanted to get this post up. The internet connections is way to slow to upload pictures. I guess that is what happens when you leave Austin and travel eastward and then north. But it must happen as we are nearing an end to our circle in the next week.
We just had a great time in New Orleans. It was so good to see our good friends Marcea and Gene (they moved here in November). Nothing like having an “excuse” to visit New Orleans.
We rolled into town on Thursday after a lllloooonnnngggg drive to from Austin, but knowing we were going to see friends made to trip more bearable. You two were super excited to see Oscar and Jasper. You have known them forever (truely forever for you Asher).
We managed to fit so much into our trip and we did not even burst into flames (although I think that it was the humidity in the air that was keeping that from happening because it was like 100 degrees everyday (with a heat advisory) and they said it felt more like 105-108. Anyway, we had a city to see so off we went.
Café Du Monde, 5 boys each with a plate of beignets and a lot of powdered sugar! That sugar has a way of sticking when you are already sweaty. You were a sugary mess Jack (which is not a struggle for you to start with). You 5 sat at one table and the 4 of us sat at another pretending that maybe you weren’t our children. After beignets it was off to walk to French Market. Jack you couldn’t wait to spend some money (but nothing new there) and you were on the quest for a VooDoo doll. After Dad got an awesome Bloody Mary he was even up for some shopping too. T-shirts, VooDoo dolls, dried Alligator heads, lots of water, shave ice, necklaces, earrings, tomatoes (for dinner), hot sauce, pralines (yes, Mom I got them) and my magnet (I am collecting them for my classroom magnet wall this trip).
Then we went to the Insectarium. Who knew that place existed. So much fun. My favorite had to have been the large ant farm. It was yours too Asher. We must of spent a good 10 minutes (along with Dad) watching the ants at work. It was amazing to see the colony at work. Lots of cool fun facts and you boys got to eat some bugs!!!!! I was brave enough to eat a cricket chocolate chip cookie, but that was it. You all at mealworm salsa, cinnamon covered grasshoppers, some kind of cheese spread with I don’t know what in it. I couldn’t do it, I have always told you to keep an open mind to knew foods and today both of you did better than I did. Kudos to you!
Over the next 3 days we went to the parks around town, we went to the movies and to the Riverwalk, a swamp tour, danced in Jackson Square.
The Swamp Tour (which was so cool, pictures to follow) as we got to feed the creatures we met along the way with marshmallows. Yes, I said marshmallows. How does someone figure out the alligators like marshmallows? We got super lucky in that we signed up for a group tour but they had some cancellations and we got our own boat (just the 9 of us). But you 5 boys are worth at least 8 passengers with the moving around, throwing marshmallows and all the questions you asked. We saw alligators (although not a lot because the river was so low and it was hot), we saw Herron, Egrets, hawks and many other birds. We saw Raccoons or river rats as the guide called them (who also love marshmallows) and wild pigs (yes, they ate the most marshmallows). It was great, I loved it and so did everyone else. We were beyond a sweaty mess when we got back 2 hours later, but we all agreed it was well worth it.
Asher you also danced in Jackson Square with a street preformer. Which was absolutely awesome because I did the same thing at your age and Oma still has the picture hanging in her room. Great old memories remembered and fabulous new ones made.
Your father has now left us. Back to work he must go & we are heading north to Graceland. This was a request from you Jack. You read about Elvis somewhere and want to go, so here we go!
