Well, today began with sleeping in since we were in beds and the cabin provided us with a bit of darkness compared to the early rise of the sun in our tents. We started with a high protein breakfast of leftover hotdogs for breakfast. Because that’s what you do when you camp with a 9 & 10 year old and then we were off to Strataca (the Salt Mines).
Strataca turned out to be great. After we got our fashionable yellow hard hats we went more than 650 feet underground and learned all about the mining process. The mine was huge and just went on and on and won’t be fully mined for another 2500 years. The other thing that I found interesting is that the Government and Hollywood store lots of things down there (important documents & film reels & prints). They have 10 compartments that take up to 25 acres.
The other thing that I found interesting was that Mike Rowe did a Dirty Jobs episode down in the mine. Now you want to watch the episode Asher. I have to agree with you though I think it would be cool to watch after having been there.
After our tour (that took about 3 ½ hours after all the walking and riding around & reading) was complete we decided to start our drive to Denver and get a hotel for the evening. Our GPS took us through some truly authentic Kansas, dirt roads, corn fields (complete with a crop duster) and lots of windmills.
